Hope Pierce- Fallen Angels
Fallen Angels was a pretty good book in my opinion. It is very real. You have this young adolescent
boy who wants so very badly to go to college and pursue a writing career, but due to financial issues
cannot afford it, which makes going into the army his only option (15). This novel does a good job of
making connections with struggles that adolescents go through as well as struggles that they cannot
even imagine. For many kids, especially black kids, there are few options available to them when
they graduate from High School. College is often unobtainable for young black men unless there is a
scholarship for sports involved so it just shows that most times going into the army is the only
choice. The book does a good job at showing the awfulness that is war and the effects that it has on
kids who are still young. The loss of innocence is shown throughout the book, and it is sad to say that
most people don't return from war the same, especially if they're young. Overall this was a good
book. I can see it being taught in the hight school classroom, but due to sensitive material, it might
pose as a challenge.

I agree with you. The book does a good job showing the good, the bad, and the ugly of the war because most people do not get the truth. However, all in all the book is relatable as most poor teens do not get the opportunity to go to college because they do not have the money to go and are often left with one option: join the army.
