Malik Floyd: Text Structure
I really did not enjoy reading
Caramelo it was a difficult read for me and overall it was hard to keep my
interest. However, the way the book being written is unique because of the way
the culture is described in the novel. It is deeply rooted and I love the way
she describes each seen as if we were there to witness it. The novel is so
descriptive and it makes you really get an understanding of what is going on
and how the setting of the particular seen really was. An example of this descriptive
writing is when Lala’s father gave away her Bobby doll that had significant
vale and meaning to her. “How can I explain, his one is my Bobby doll, two
fingers missing on his left hand because I chewed them off when I was teething.
(pg.26)” By her giving a vivid description of how the doll looked with two
fingers and how the two fingers got that way it makes you realize how important
that doll was to her.
I also think that it is really cool
how she uses both English and Spanish throughout the book to make things seem more
vivid or important. It also makes the reader cross read the two languages which
makes her points stand out. “We’ve been waiting all morning for Uncle Fat-Face
to telephone and say, -Quihubo, brother, vamonos…pg.7” as readers we can
actually picture the uncles communicating with each other on the phone excited
about their trip. Not only can we picture them ubrothers talking back an d forth,
we can also imagine Lala telling the story to us as if we were sitting on her
couch listening to her. Overall this book is my least favorite so far but I love
how descriptive it is. It paints vivid pictures of what is happening in the
book, the only thing is it is hard to follow and keep my interest and I think
some students would battle this problem also.
