Turn off or on?

Throughout reading Feed I kept having two incredibly juxtaposed ideas and value appear in my head. There is constant conversation in our time about “how much screen time is too much?” Or “when is too early to give children technology. The themes presented in this book show a grim future for the world that values technology so highly. I understood and agreed with that idea. However, another nagging voice in my head had another opinion.
With the world having constant evolution in industry, technology, and economy we are constantly in need of new innovations. Learning has also began slowly evolving in the world with the evolution of technology. We are now seeing computers, iPads, even 3-D printers become available in schools to aid education because stem and technology jobs are in incredibly high demand in this new society.
So when it comes to this conversation, should we shield our children from technology? It could help them mature socially more effectively. However, it could have an adverse effect of stunting your child’s technological intelligence. The difference between not having a computer as a 13 year old or not could be the difference for that student reaching his full potential in engineering and working at a job that doesn’t fit what he wants to do. So I leave you with two questions. Should we put a direct and finite limit on screen time? Should we shield our children from technology until a certain age? I don’t really feel more strongly either way. It is just an interesting discussion.

  1. I think you have a lot of good thoughts relating to the book. I think that it is good for children to understand technology and have "screen time" but also to have outside time and be educated with the world around them, using technology to understand the world beyond them. I had an interesting thought while reading your post... even class discussions have moved to online portals such as this. It's just an example of how hybrid classes are becoming increasingly valued but at what cost?

  2. I do believe that children should be shielded from technology at a certain age because they should learn that there are more important things in the world. Also, yes we should put a limit on screen time to reduce the habit of being attached to technology.

  3. I think the two questions you pose are so interesting and things I think about a lot. I like that you mentioned how maybe leaving a kid at 13 y.o without a computer might put them at a disadvantage educationally and in the working world. I like to think that we can raise children with a healthy balance of both off screen time and time where they can enjoy their technology but also without forgetting about the world around them: nature, their friends, and other social relationships they should be building face to face. If we completely limit them from technology than we are not setting them up for a success in a world that is ever evolving technologically.
