Zach's Introduction
My name is Zachary Gilliland, but I go by Zach for short. I am a 24 year old senior from Inman, South Carolina. I switched my major from secondary education/history to middle level education, so I added English as well. I actually switched my major sophomore year from Secondary education/English to history, so I have some experience in college-level English classes from before. I am excited to teach middle school so that I can be certified in both history and English.
I do not play any sports at Upstate, but I played baseball and tennis in high school. I really enjoy watching sports now, with college football being my favorite. I am a huge Clemson fan and go to most home games with my family. I work full-time during the summers, but during the school year I will probably only work 10-15 hours a week. I work for a landscaping company, so my boss is really good about working with my hours.
I am sort of a shy person, and more of an introvert. I don’t really enjoy public speaking, so I’m usually not the type to share all my thoughts in a classroom discussion. I realize that’s a part of this class and I will embrace that, but I figured that’s something you should know about me. I was an avid reader in elementary school and some in middle school, but I stopped reading as much once I got to high school. I read every night in elementary school, and some of the book series that stand out are Harry Potter, A to Z Mysteries, and Magic Tree House. I still enjoy reading, but I would say the material is what has changed for me. While I read novels and books more growing up, now I do a lot of reading online in the form of articles or essays. I still enjoy reading novels, but finding the time for it is more of a challenge now.
It's great to have you in class, Zach. Even though I grew up in Lyman, I've lived in Inman for most of my adult life, so we have something in common. Did you attend Chapman High? I do hope you enjoy the books we discuss in class, and that you are able to voice your perspectives. I think you will have much to add to our conversations.
