Josh Holmes - Blog Post #1

     1. My major area of study is Secondary Education with a focus on English. I started my college career wanting to be a journalist, attending SCC and receiving my Associate in Arts degree. During the transfer to Upstate, I decided to pursue teaching and have been on that track since.

    2. I have many hobbies! I collect vinyl records (I own about 660 records and consider them to be my prized possessions). I thrift a lot with the intention of reselling. I run a YouTube channel with my girlfriend of 12 years related to thrifting called Dummy Records & Thrift, where we film ourselves finding great stuff to resell. We have about 2,000 subscribers to our channel, which we are very proud of. I also write and play music, as I have been playing guitar for about 15 years and drums for around 2 years. I often play street concerts with my best friend Zakk for the Chapman Cultural Center, which is really fun. My two passions in life are horror movies and heavy metal music. My favorite movie of all time is Rocky Horror Picture Show and my favorite bands are Type O Negative, Megadeth, and Metallica.

    3. I have worked as an after school counselor for the past 8 years at an Elementary school in Spartanburg and have had a great time doing that. However, this year, I left that job to pursue substitute teaching at Dorman High School to better prepare myself for the High School classroom environment. I usually work Tuesdays and Thursdays, as those are my only two free days in the week where I'm not on campus.

    4. As a learner, I absorb information best in a lecture setting. I have taken a plethora of online courses and genuinely feel that I don't have the self-discipline to keep track of my work if I'm not obligated to show up to class. Often, classes that are online get sidelined in my experience for classes that I actually have to attend. Other than that, I can sometimes have trouble remembering to do assignments due to procrastination.

    5. As a child, my favorite book of all time was the Goosebumps book "The Haunted Mask" by RL Stine. I was a Goosebumps fanatic as a child and related to the character of Carly Beth because she was sort of an outcast in her community. I moved around a lot as a kid, which led to me often being alone for the simple fact that I just didn't know anybody. I eventually met others that became my friends, but one doesn't forget that feeling of sitting at lunch alone, even if it was for just one day. Through High school, I got really into Stephen King and ready a majority of his early works - Carrie, Pet Sematary, Misery, etc. and had an absolute blast with those books. Books have played a huge role in my life. I was considered a "gifted reader" in Elementary school and have genuinely enjoyed reading my entire life. I can't think of a time in my life where I hated reading. I was obsessed with Goosebumps, Harry Potter, Lemony Snicket, and, eventually, Stephen King, and still am to this day.

  1. omg, I loved Goosebumps too! (I actually wrote that on my blog before I even saw this!) I read so many of them, I can't remember, but I can't remember if I read the Haunted Mask or not...I love Harry Potter, too, and while I'm not into horror, my best friend loves Stephen King.
I'm the same way with online versus in person; it's harder for me to keep track of assignments online...but I prefer conversations to lectures.
It's cool that you're getting all that experience in teaching! The YouTube channel is super cool, too, and congrats on 12 years with your girl--that's a long time!

  2. Wow! You have so many vinyls! That's so amazing. I like to collect books (so surprising), and I'm getting very close to 660 myself. That's a lot of subscribers for you and your girlfriend's YouTube channel, congratulations! And I'm totally with you, I do much better sitting in lectures. I also do not have the self discipline to do online classes. That's why I try my hardest to limit myself to one or no online classes at all. I hate them and I feel so unconnected to anything we're doing. My terrible trait of procrastination might factor into my hatred of online classes as well. Maybe one of these days I'll get better at online courses. :)

  3. I love horror movies. My personal favorite would have to be the original Scream. I also listen to metal music, but haven't really listened to those bands, I personally listen to Ice Nine Kills, Famous Last Words, and various other artists.
